On October 5th, 2024, Alpaca Expeditions undertook an initiative that left a profound impact on the hearts of the children from the Patabamba community. Through our Cultural Sundays program, we organized a visit to the historic sites of Moray and the Archaeological Center of Chinchero in the Sacred Valley. This journey was more than just an excursion; it was an encounter with the past, offering the children a chance to reconnect with their roots and learn the value of their cultural heritage.

The goal of this experience was clear: to foster pride in their culture and ensure that ancestral knowledge is passed down to future generations. We wanted each child to see the richness of their history and understand that their culture is a living part of their identity. At Moray, the children observed the circular agricultural terraces, learning how the ancient Incas experimented with microclimates to optimize their crops. Guided by expert interpreters, they discovered that this place not only represents a feat of engineering but also reflects the ingenuity and respect for nature held by their ancestors.

In Chinchero, the children received a detailed and engaging explanation of the historical significance of the Archaeological Center of Chinchero, gaining insight into its value within Inca culture. Through this exploration, they came to understand the relevance of agricultural terraces, traditional construction techniques, and the influence of these practices on the daily lives of their ancestors. This journey allowed them to connect with their community’s history and appreciate the enduring cultural legacy in the region.

As the day progressed, the children listened to stories about their ancestors, which highlighted the importance of their cultural heritage. Each activity, story, and hands-on lesson was designed to instill a sense of belonging and respect for their roots. The experience was enriching, allowing these young explorers to discover the value of their cultural identity and the impact they can have in preserving these traditions for future generations.

When the sun set over the majestic Sacred Valley, it was clear that this day had achieved much more than a simple visit to archaeological sites. It was a moment of unity and reflection, where the past, present, and future came together through the eyes of the children. They are the guardians of this cultural legacy, and their enthusiasm and smiles reflect the hope for a future rooted in respect for their history, identity, and culture.

This experience not only strengthened each child’s sense of identity but also underscored Alpaca Expeditions’ commitment to promoting and preserving Andean culture. In every Cultural Sundays project, we strive to create experiences that strengthen the community, instilling values of respect and connection with nature and history. We firmly believe in the importance of future generations growing with a deep appreciation for their roots so that these traditions continue to thrive in a changing world.
