Committed to a Sustainable Inca Trail: Zero Plastic and Environmental Conservation
with Alpaca Expeditions

What is Sustainable Tourism?

The United Nations World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as:
Sustainable tourism is tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities. – UNWTO

Dear Visitors and Alpaca Expeditions Family:

We are proud to be a sustainable company committed to the care of our Protected Natural Areas (PNAs). We invite all our travelers to join us in this conservation mission, especially within the Inca Trail Network and the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (HSM). Our primary goal is to achieve minimal environmental impact within these unique natural settings.

Our organization is dedicated to environmental protection through the management of environmental risks associated with our activities, implementing the following initiatives:

  • Annual Reforestation Campaigns: We work to restore natural areas and contribute to local biodiversity.
  • Clean-Up Campaigns on Various Tourist Routes: We help keep trails clean to preserve their natural beauty.
  • Solid Waste Management Plan: We maintain a waste management plan that includes recycling and sorting at each campsite.
  • Water and Energy Conservation: We prioritize responsible use of essential resources.
  • Reduction of Plastic Use: Across all our operations, we minimize single-use plastics, encouraging travelers to bring reusable water bottles and containers.
  • Paper Recycling and Reuse: We implement paper recycling practices in our offices and operations, promoting reuse wherever possible to reduce consumption.
  • Ongoing Environmental Training: Our staff undergoes continuous training on Environmental Aspects and Impacts for sustainable operations.

Water Bottle
For all of the above, we invite you to contribute to the sustainability and conservation of the SHM. We ask you to bring your own water bottles or camelbacks. If you purchase or consume water in plastic bottles along the way, please pour the contents into your canteens or consume it on the spot, and return the bottles or plastic bags to the vendors. The goal is to have zero plastics in our operation.

Another important aspect is the care and reuse of rain ponchos:

Within SHM, care for and respect existing biodiversity.

Make the correct selection of solid waste.

How to avoid leaving plastic items in the camps?
In each camp, you will find bags of different colors next to the dining tent, where you can leave the garbage generated during the route according to the color indicated by the guide.

How do we practice Zero Plastic?
For many years, Alpaca Expeditions has been a leader in waste management and zero plastic. We recommend that all our tourists carry a reusable water bottle. In addition, we provide reusable rain ponchos and all kitchen products, such as groceries, are carried in reusable items. We care for Machu Picchu National Park for future generations.

How do we avoid water pollution on the Inca Trail?
Alpaca Expeditions works with suppliers of biodegradable products, including biodegradable soap and detergent that we bring on the trail so that travelers can wash their hands and our cooking equipment safely and ecologically.

We invite every visitor to join us in our commitment to the nature and culture of Machu Picchu. With your collaboration, we can protect this treasure for future generations.
